COMPETITION 2006


Lino Cazzavillan, a very well known figure in Venice, is the promoter of the Competition in 2006. Entrepreneur and maecen he always distinguisced himself for his interest towards young realities active in the city, from sportive to artistic associations.

The cooperation with the 3D Gallery begins thanks to his interest toward the young established realities. The 3D Gallery focuses his interest to contemporary art and his activities are finalized to the promotion of young artists. The interest of Lino Cazzavillan toward the art world permitted the recreation of the historic Competition La Colomba after 11 long years of silence. With the cooperation of the 3D Gallery the new version of the Competition has some variations in the peculiarities that characterized the previous editions, which were organized by the famous Cavallino Gallery and his owner Cardazzo.

The 2006 Competition maintains the structure and the rules that the competition consolidated through the years, these were kept as index of respect toward the important history and background of the competition. Therefore the theme of the competition remains the same, same for the rules, which are only adapted to the peculiarities of the activity of the 3D Gallery.

The big participation of young artists is an important difference to the past. This evidence shows the success of the cultural lay-down undertaken towards the young artists, mainly between 21 and 35 years old. A deep satisfaction to see arrive almost 800 artworks sent by more than 500 artists, even from very far Counties: Chile, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Israel, China, Bulgaria, Usa and many other. The 2006 Competition shows a cross-section of the contemporary artworld of these years aswell, showing evidence of the very different artistic medias used by the artists.

An additional characterization of the 2006 Competition is the way used by the jury choosing the winner. The jury reached his verdict based exclusively on a quality judgement, without knowing the names of the artists. The members retain to award the artworks considered the most representative in the wide range of the linguistic and technical experiences presented to the competition by the participants.

After a very interesting and long discussion that was extended until late night in the rooms of the Restaurant La Colomba, the board finally choosed the six awarded artworks and a rose of selected artists who received purchase-prize and week-ends in Venice.

The catalogue presented in the occasion of the prize giving ceremony, edits for the first time history of the Competition commenced in 1953.

Even the cooperation with the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation is a successful innovation. The Foundation’s activities and aim are mainly addressed towards young artists, the rooms of the venue in Saint Mark Square hosted the final exhibition that was opened on the 22 of October and was very successful. The jury consultant Philippe Daverio pays always attention to the “mixed” artistic situations and was therefore an important cooperator. His vision/ consideration referring the competition is well expressed in the video he made specially for the opening of the final exhibition of the event. Daverio, with Jean Blanchaert and Elena Agudio, presents the winner of the 2006 competition as they were player of a hypothetical football game.

The awarded artworks are now exhibited in the rooms of the Restaurant La Colomba, next to the winner of the previous competitions. It is possible to see the works of Boetti, Picasso and other big artists that in the previous years left the evidence of their passage, together with the works of young and very young artists.

The great surprise of the competition that was restarted by Lino Cazzavillan, is the creation/opening of a new scene dedicated to contemporary art. The asset goes to Lino Cazzavillan, but it was possible to realize it only with the adhesion and sustain of all the participants: the artsists, that have the asset to have sustained with their presence the idea of a new possible place to “make art”, the important jury, that has legitimated the artistic and cultural value of the experienced Competition “A Menu for La Colomba”.
